McGuinness Boulevard has been a contested topic for two years, and Greenpoint residents in support of a redesign are rallying against Mayor Eric Adams’ call for the Department of Transportation to rework original redesign plans.

About two years ago, a teacher was struck and killed at an intersection on the boulevard. Last week, Adams told the DOT to come up with an alternative plan to the original redesign proposal.

Some in the Greenpoint community say that the redesign is necessary for a safer street, while others are worried about changes to the boulevard that could make traffic even more congested and negatively impact local businesses.

Organizers with the group Make McGuinness Safe rallied outside of City Hall to urge Adams to stick to the DOT’s original plan.

A spokesperson from the DOT provided the following statement:

“NYC DOT is dedicated to enhancing the safety of critical arteries like McGuinness Boulevard. We’re reviewing community stakeholder feedback as we finalize the design.”
