Multiple homes on Kingsland Avenue destroyed in massive morning fire

Multiple homes on Kingsland Avenue were destroyed in a massive fire early Friday morning.
The FDNY says the fire started just before 4 a.m. inside a multifamily home at 137 Kingsland Ave. Within minutes, it spread to the homes around it. Plumes of smoke and bright orange flames could be seen from the sky in Williamsburg as firefighters raced to put out the fire.
The fire took three hours to get under control, and firefighters were on scene for most of the morning to ensure it would not reignite.
Sherry Wasserman lives in one of the apartments and recalled waking up to her neighbor screaming to get out.
"She was yelling, 'Fire! Fire! Get out!' I woke up, grabbed my phone, grabbed my keys and I ran out the building," said Wasserman.
The FDNY says five people suffered minor injuries, including two firefighters. Three were sent to the hospital and are expected to be OK.
The Red Cross says it has assisted 13 victims, including a child.
The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
