New exhibition in DUMBO putting people’s five senses to the test
The museum's president says each person’s taste is different and could have even changed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A new exhibition is testing what New Yorkers think they know about flavor and their senses.
The Museum of Food and Drink (MoFaD), located in DUMBO, is offering up a sensory overload in their ‘Flavor: The World to Your Brain’ exhibit. It opened on Valentine’s Day and includes interactive displays.
MoFaD’s president Nazli Parvisi says each person’s taste is different and could have even changed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We make sure with your little spoon you go around you taste the elements of flavor on your tongue, that's salty, bitter, sour umami how you experience spice versus cooling menthol,” said Parvizi. “What we really wanted to do was unpack this thing, flavor... and talk about what is going on in your brain, what’s going on in the world that really impacts this."
The exhibit shows off how other senses impact how people experience flavor, and even gives a closer look at the brain’s reaction to different flavors.
The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the exhibit is open through the end of 2024.
