Mayor announces plan to check bags, add metal detectors at certain subway stations amid rise in crime

New York City has seen its fair share of high-profile violent crimes on the city’s subways, and Mayor Eric Adams announced that the city plans to reinforce bag checks and metal detectors at some stations.
Mayor Eric Adams says that there was a version of bag checking in action that will receive adjustments following these recent crimes, including the fatal shooting of a crossing guard that took place in January.
The NYPD says that they had 1,000 officers a day stationed across the city’s subway system in February due to the spike in transit crime. They added that there has still been around a 15% drop in transit crime compared to last year around this time.
Adams stated that there are two models of potential metal detectors that must go through inspection before being purchased for use in the subway system. The mayor’s administration is working with the MTA to ensure they get the proper equipment installed.
The mayor also added that bag checks could return as soon as next week.
