A proposal for a portion of Mount Prospect Park to be converted into a skatepark has sparked heated debate on both sides from residents and skaters in Brooklyn.
The public debate regarding the proposal took place at Brooklyn Borough Hall on Monday night. Skateboarders said they are far too limited in where they can skate, while community members say they opposed adding skate parks in their backyards.
The proposal outlines 40,000 square feet of the park that would be turned into a skate park. A total of 5,000 square feet would be allotted to an extra green area. The city first announced this skate park plan back in January during the mayor’s State of the City address.
More discussions will continue to take place through the summer and even into the fall before development would begin.
