A rally to end gun violence took place with students and staff outside of the Williamsburg Charter School one year after three people were injured in a shooting at the school.

Protesters held their second annual rally to raise their voices against gun violence. In 2023, they marched to Gilbert Ramirez Park to call for better protections at their school.

The shooting took place on Feb. 8, 2023 and left one 15-year-old student, one 17-year-old student and a 37-year-old guard at the school hurt.

Students were the main organizers of the rally and not only called for change but honored the three people who were victims in the incident.

"We just took up the charge and say we're going to be resilient. This is not who we are as a school and we're going to come together to really fight back and show the community all the good we are here,” said Janelle Holford, of Instructional Academy Leaders.

To ensure the safety of the students since then, an assistant principal at the school says its added metal detectors, more safety officers, and even partnered with the local precinct to monitor school members using public transportation.
