Locals in the Coney Island neighborhood are on edge about pedestrian safety after a 70-year-old woman was hit by an MTA bus on Thursday.

A group of students spoke to News 12 and say that the area is a busy hub for public transportation, and that they’re not shocked it happened at the intersection of Stillwell and Mermaid avenues.
"We got off the shuttle bus and like all of this area was just blocked off and there was a lot of cops,” said one student. “There's like five different bus routes that come here… there are buses turning and there's a crosswalk but there's no like crossing guard or anything.”
Data from the Department of Transportation shows an unsafe pattern at the intersection – Thursday’s accident is now the ninth traffic-related injury to be recorded from 2023 to now.
