New York City officials are sending an alert to the parents of public school students. Mayor Eric Adams announced a plan to educate families on safely storing firearms.
It comes on the heels of a tragic shooting in Brooklyn where a 12-year-old child shot and killed his 14-year-old cousin after they were playing with a gun. The Department of Education plans to send out a multi-page letter detailing how to safely store guns and how to have conversations about guns.
Officials say 70% of incidents where children intentionally shoot themselves or others happen at home.
"We often spend a lot of time talking about the gun violence that takes place on our streets. And we sometimes miss what happens and a large number of accidental discharges, deaths, injuries we take for granted. It was something I always thought about when I brought home my gun as a police officer. Where am I storing it? How am I storing it?" Adams said.
Officials say the DOE plans to send this letter out shortly.
