Today marks the first official day of summer, and New York City health experts have a few recommendations before cooling off at the beach.

Officials say to never swim under the influence of drugs or alcohol and to watch out for currents.

The state's health department says reports show that most drownings happen to those who know how to swim. That's why that even those comfortable in the water should avoid risks and closed sections of the beach.

Lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at city beaches. If you don't see one, don't get in the water.

Last summer, two swimmers drowned due to rip currents including a 15-year-old boy in Coney Island. Both people were swimming when lifeguards were not on duty.

While New York City's outdoor pools do not open for another week, but indoor pools are open year-round.
