Doctors at UConn Health were the first in Connecticut to perform a procedure that dramatically reduces fibroids in the uterus.

The high-intensity ultrasounds system, called Sonata, requires no incisions and leaves the uterus and hormone production intact.

The procedure took 47 minutes on average during clinical trials, according to medical officials.

The medical team has used Sonata on 10 patients so far. Dr. Luciano says patients are thrilled about the alternative to surgery.

“As women, we deserve to have another option other than hysterectomy. Just because we have pain in our uterus, doesn't mean we have to remove our uterus every time,” she said. “Up until now, we didn't have these options."

While the procedure reduces the size of existing fibroids, it cannot prevent future fibroids from growing.

Dr. Luciano says some women who are prone fibroids may opt for surgical treatment rather than Sonata.
