After efforts to clean up the sewage and debris left behind after the disastrous water main break on Webster Avenue, local residents can now breathe a little easier thanks to the New York City Emergency Management Department.

For over a week, many residents were left without gas, power and electricity due to the wreckage and water damage. Red Cross quickly came to the aid of many left without any means to prepare meals, stepping in to provide lunch, snacks, water and even a Christmas dinner. Today, residents residing within the Botanical Square Buildings now have access to power, with even more units expected to receive power in the next few days.

Residents like Guba Lopez are more than happy with the positive update. "We were missing the gas and electricity, it was hard," says Lopez.

The New York City Emergency Management Department said that "building management will provide [tenants with] electric cooking plates."

As for the debris, the Department of Environmental Protection subcontractor will continue sewer cleaning and maintenance operations on Webster Avenue. The Red Cross will continue to provide meals to residents of both buildings today through Sunday, Dec. 29.
