Police: 89-year-old man removed from car in water in Mill Basin

A driver is fighting for his life after crashing through a metal gate and landing in his vehicle upside down in the East Mill Basin waterway.

Police were called at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday to 56 Drive between E. 66 Street and Whitman Drive.

Witness video shows divers being lowered into the water from helicopters and the car upside down, with tires poking out of the water.

Police said an 89-year-old man was rescued and taken to Mount Siani Hospital where he is critical condition.

Witnesses said first responders performed CPR on the man after he was pulled from the water.
