A long-vacant sporting goods store on Flatbush Avenue is being transformed into something new for Brooklyn’s kids: a basketball training center.
The Brooklyn Basketball Training Center will feature two full-size courts, a half-court shooting lab and advanced tech to help kids improve their game.
“There will be cutting-edge technology where kids can work on their shots,” said Marissa Shorenstein, of BFC Global External Affairs.
The center will offer programming backed by trainers and players from the Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty. Organizers say it’s about more than just basketball, it’s about creating a welcoming space for local youth.
“We’ll invite the community in, get them off the streets in the summertime and after school, and give them something positive to look forward to,” Shorenstein said.
Neighbors say they’re relieved the building won’t sit empty much longer.
“I’ve been waiting for something to really benefit the community,” said resident Robert Fabricant. “I think it’s great. I think kids are going to love it.”
Shorenstein says the center will be open seven days a week and will focus on after-school hours when students need it most, from around 3:30 to 8:30 p.m.
While it's set to open this September, families won’t have to wait until then to get involved.
Brooklyn Basketball’s summer camps for kids ages 6 to 14, including an all-girls program at Barclays Center, are now open for registration.
