Bushwick residents and local organizations held a vigil on Morgan Avenue Friday night to call for safety improvements after police say a man was hit and killed by a truck there on Wednesday.

"It's a death that can be avoidable. This street is really dangerous and something needs to be done before it's been another another death," said resident Juan Serra.

Data from Transportation Alternatives claims this was the fourth death on Morgan Avenue since 2022, and three of them were caused by box trucks. Alexa Sledge, the director of communications for Transportation Alternatives says change needs to be made.

“It's past time to make Morgan safe. If we'd done it four years ago, we wouldn't be here today. And the best time to do it, obviously would have been when the street was first designed nut the second-best time to do it is now. That looks like protected bike lanes, that looks like raised crosswalks, that looks like daylighting," said Sledge.

Residents like Jason Gers tells News 12 residents have made multiple pleas to make the road safer and that there's a petition with more than 500 signatures.

"We knew in advance already that this was something that could happen and was likely to happen, that another person would be killed. And here we are to remember another life that was taken right here," said Gers.

News 12 reached out to the New York City Department of Transportation about safety improvements along Morgan Avenue and is waiting to hear back.

Police have not yet identified the man who died.
