Freezer sparks fire scare inside Brownsville deli

A deli in Brownsville had a frightening start to the day after a freezer inside began smoking and sparking overnight.
It happened just after 1:45 a.m. Thursday at Chawki Deli Grocery Corp. near Sutter Avenue and Junius Street.
Video from inside shows a red freezer in the front of the store suddenly sparking. Smoke begins to pour out, and a worker pulls the freezer away from the wall.
“It was scary. I had to leave the store. I thought we were about to burn. I saw smoke coming out there under the fridge smoke sparkling. It was crazy. I had to call 911. They came really quick. They told me to shut the fridge down,” said the worker behind the counter, who did not want to show his face on camera.
Fire crews responded quickly and made sure the situation didn’t spread beyond the appliance.
By morning, the deli was back open for business, and the worker says he’s just grateful it wasn’t worse.
