Two men are now facing federal charges, nearly one year after a child died from drug poisoning while at a family shelter in East Flatbush.

Investigators said 34-year-old Yitzchok “Isak” Sklar and 33-year-old Ahuva Katzin, both of Brooklyn, were charged this week with conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death.

This came after investigators said Sklar’s 4-year-old son, Aaron, died on March 4, 2025.

“For lack of a better term, [it’s] poor parenting, completely recklessness behavior,” said Christopher Roberts, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA’s New York Task Force Division.

Roberts said the child was found having a medical emergency, then taken to two different hospitals, where he was pronounced dead.

“Anytime a child dies, it’s completely tragic because a child is completely innocent,” said Roberts. “[The boy] didn’t purposely ingest any of the narcotics. He had no chance. He has no chance ever again in life.”

Roberts said Sklar and the child’s mother, 26-year-old Miriam Elkayam, were arrested on state charges shortly after the incident.

He added that the boy’s parents were released from custody but still face the state charges; all while Sklar allegedly returned to dealing drugs.

“[Sklar] continued to deal drugs up until his arrest [this week],” said Roberts.

As for Katzin, Roberts said the 33-year-old is the alleged drug supplier.

If convicted, Katzin and Sklar could face a mandatory minimum of 20 years to life in prison.

The NYC Department of Social Services spokesperson released the following statement: “

This was an incredibly heart-breaking and shocking tragedy, and we offer our deepest condolences to all those who have been impacted.”
