Firefighters rescue osprey entangled in fishing line

While the bird's toes were swollen from the ordeal, officials say the osprey is expected to make a full recovery and soaring through the skies shortly once released back into the wild.

A female osprey will soon be flying high again after being rescued Thursday by the Port Washington Fire Department in the Village of Sands Point.

Crews were called around 11:30 a.m. after the bird got caught in tangled fishing wire. Firefighters carefully freed the bird and turned it over to Wildlife In Need of Rescue and Rehabilitation.

While the bird's toes were swollen from the ordeal, officials say the osprey is expected to make a full recovery and soaring through the skies shortly once released back into the wild.

The birds migrate to Long Island every year around March.

Ospreys were previously considered endangered, but were removed from the list in the last decade.
