A 20-year-old Washington Township man was arrested on an underage drunk driving charge after a crash that knocked down utility poles and sparked a vehicle fire late Saturday night, police said.

Officers responded around 11 p.m. to Hurffville-Grenloch Road near Hurffville School for a serious crash in which a vehicle hit two telephone poles, snapping one in half and bringing down wires that caused a power outage.

The vehicle later caught fire and was extinguished by firefighters.

Witnesses told police the driver tried to hide alcohol before officers arrived at the scene. The driver told police he had been coming from Rowan University.

Police said neither the driver nor a passenger was injured in the crash.

The driver was arrested and charged with underage DWI, issued summonses and released to his mother.
