Student released from ICE custody welcomed home at Cheshire event
State and federal officials will join the family of Rihan, a Cheshire High School student detained since April 6, to call for accountability.

A Cheshire High School student who had been unlawfully detained by ICE since April 6 is being welcomed home today at an event attended by state and federal officials. Rihan, who was released from custody, will return to his community during a gathering scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Cheshire Town Hall.
He had been held at an ICE detention center in Massachusetts for two weeks. Rihan came to the United States legally in 2024.
Governor Ned Lamont, Senator Richard Blumenthal, Attorney General William Tong, advocates and local officials are expected to attend. Organizers say the event will also include calls for accountability regarding the circumstances of Rihan’s detention.
Rihan and his family have been pursuing a legal path to citizenship since entering the United States under a humanitarian visa. The visa reflects the service of his father, Zia, who worked as a translator for U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
