Two men were killed in two unrelated incidents in the Bronx on Sunday night.
The first shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. at E. 161st Street and Cortlandt Avenue, where officers found Javan Jones, 34, of Manhattan, shot in the back. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital, where he died, according to the NYPD.
A single patrol car remained at the scene Monday, a stark contrast to the heavy police response captured on video the night before, which showed more than a dozen officers rushing in as Jones was loaded onto a stretcher.
Witnesses say they heard at least two shots before police arrived.
Four minutes later, officers were called to a stabbing on West Farms Road near Rodman Place. A 29-year-old man was stabbed multiple times and later died at the hospital, authorities said. Investigators are searching for several people who fled the scene. Police are withholding his name until family is notified.
Police said the two incidents are not connected.
They come days after the mayor and police commissioner highlighted record-low crime levels in the borough, with major crime down 11% in April compared with the same time last year.
“I barely walk outside anymore. It’s not worth it. The mayor needs to get more cops on the block, more cops on the corners," said Jose L., who lives in Melrose.
The NYPD recently launched its Summer Violence Reduction Plan, deploying roughly 2,600 officers on overnight and early morning foot patrols in high-crime areas. The department has not said whether either incident occurred within those patrol zones.
The NYPD commissioner recently announced an additional 200 officers to be permanently assigned to the borough as they divide it into two patrol boroughs to increase resources.
