Brooklyn man sentenced to 15 years in prison after shooting at MTA employees in 2023

A Brooklyn man was sentenced on Tuesday to 15 years in prison after he opened fire at city transit workers in April 2023.
Investigators said 52-year-old Samuel White, of Starrett City, shot at four MTA fare enforcement inspectors near Flatlands and Louisiana avenues.
It happened after inspectors boarded a B82 Select Bus Service.
“[White] said he did have a monthly MetroCard but he just didn’t swipe it,” said Patrick Daley, one of those MTA inspectors. “So, we asked him to step off the bus to swipe his MetroCard, and at first, he refused.”
Investigators said White eventually got off the bus and got angry, then claimed that the transit employees made him late for work.
“[White] walked around the corner, came back with a firearm behind his bag; and I noticed the bag in front, so I didn’t let him walk down on us,” said Daley. “I told him to stop, ‘don’t come any closer.’ And he just started to shoot at us.”
Investigators said White fired 10 shots. One of them grazed Daley in his right leg. Another bullet lodged into a nearby tree.
“[MTA employees] came here to support their families, and at no time should they be shot at while doing their job,” said Demetrius Crichlow, president of NYC Transit.
Transit officials said surveillance video from the bus helped put the gunman behind bars.
White previously accepted a deal after he pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree attempted murder.
“I’m feeling relieved that we got him, and justice was served today,” said Daley.
