As New Jersey prepares for a busy summer with the FIFA World Cup, America’s 250th birthday and seasonal travel, South Brunswick police are taking steps to prevent an increase in crashes and traffic-related incidents.

A new initiative dubbed Operation Safe Summer will increase police visibility on the roads and urge motorists to make safe driving a priority.

“We expect increased travel with all the events going on in our state, from FIFA and 250 celebrations to summer travel,” Deputy Chief James Ryan said. “We need all motorists to partner with us to improve safety on our roadways.”

Beginning Tuesday, the police department will have 43 officers on patrol for 24 hours to launch a crackdown on multiple offenses. Police will target speeders, careless drivers, people who improperly drive on the shoulder of the road and other violations that could potentially lead to crashes.

“Every officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant and captain working will be focused on traffic enforcement,” Ryan said.

Lt. Matthew Skolsky said everyone normally in the building will be on the roads Tuesday to participate in the enhanced enforcement. He said the goal is to increase police presence, educate the public and enforce traffic safety laws.

According to Ryan, traffic safety data shows that motor vehicle crashes are the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths in both the United States and New Jersey.

“Our goal is simple,” Ryan added. “We want everyone to arrive safely at their destination and return home to their families.”
