A 2-year-old girl is fighting for her life in the hospital after falling out of a window in Midwood.
Police say it happened Monday just after 8 a.m.
Officers responded to a 911 call for help near 1527 East 2nd Street. First responders rushed the 2-year-old to Maimonides Hospital in critical condition.
Neighbors sharing their shock with News 12 and immediately thinking of their own children.
"I'd be devastated. I can't imagine," one Midwood neighbor. "But accidents happen. Parents should be more aware if they need screens or gates."
Police have not confirmed if the 2-year-old was alone at the time of the fall.
The city's health department urges New Yorkers to never leave a child alone in a room where there are open windows without window guards. And says screens are not a substitute for window guards.
The city also requires window guards in buildings that have at least three apartments and a child 10 years old or younger.
Police officers are still investigating what led up to the fall.
