A World Cup matchup between South Korea and Mexico is bringing fans together across the borough, even as their teams prepare to face off.
Viral videos showing Korean and Mexican fans celebrating side by side have been circulating online. That same energy is on display in Brooklyn. From Korean eateries to Mexican bars, watch parties are drawing packed crowds and a blend of supporters embracing both cultures.
Fans say the connection goes beyond soccer.
“It’s a big emphasis on food, family, partying, and now, soccer,” said Eonjoo and Heriberto, a Korean and Mexican couple watching the match together.
At Socceria in Greenpoint, owner Tania Apolinar said the shared excitement has turned what could be a rivalry into something more meaningful.
“We all love our boy bands and partying and getting together,” Apolinar said. “It feels like a real friendship and less of a rivalry.”
The love between the two fandoms started back in 2018, when Mexican fans cheered for Korea to defeat Germany, to help them advance in their World Cup run.
That sense of community is on full display, with cheers erupting inside crowded bars and spilling out into the streets. Fans wearing both Korean and Mexican jerseys filled tables and sidewalks alike.
Still, loyalty to each team remains strong.
“It’s Mexico all the way,” one fan said.
“Korea is winning it,” another fan said.
Even with the competitive spirit, many say the bond between the two fan bases will last beyond the final whistle.
Apollinar said the celebration will continue no matter the outcome, but added that she already has a plan if Mexico comes out on top.
“If Mexico wins, we have some tequila with the Korea fans,” Apolinar said.
