A Mahopac church is cleaning up after recent storms caused significant damage to the building.

Flooding at St. John the Evangelist Parish left parts of the church underwater following days of heavy rain.

Church officials said the basement social hall and other areas of the church were heavily damaged.

“Damaged all the basement social hall, also the top of the church ... the first floor of the church was full of water,” said Father Szymon Kurpios.

Parishioners and their families quickly stepped in to help with cleanup efforts.

“Thank God some families came immediately and they started working hard,” Kurpios said.

Cleanup work continued Tuesday as volunteers worked to remove water and repair damage.

The church also serves as a food pantry for the community.
