A New York City taxi driver was shot in the face early Friday morning after trying to intervene in a dispute that erupted following a crash in Fort Greene, according to police and sources familiar with the investigation.
The New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers identified the victim as 50-year-old MD Amin, who was working an overnight shift when the violence unfolded around 4:00 a.m. on North Portland Avenue.
Police say the shooting happened shortly after a vehicle crash in the area. A source told News 12 that an argument broke out after the collision. The source said Amin was not involved in the dispute but stepped in to try to calm the situation before he was shot.
Video from the scene showed shattered glass scattered across the roadway hours after the incident, while emergency crews rushed Amin to the hospital on a stretcher. Another source said the driver remained in surgery at Methodist Hospital later Friday morning.
The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission condemned the attack, calling violence against licensed drivers “unacceptable” and emphasizing that every driver deserves to work safely and with dignity.
