Former St. Nicholas Home set to be demolished for new high school in Bay Ridge

The next phase of a major construction project is about to get underway in Bay Ridge.
Demolition is expected to begin within the next 10 days on the former St. Nicholas Home, which served older adults for decades. Before that, the site was home to Bay Ridge Hospital.
“For many, many years it was a fabric of the community, was a part of the community,” said Josephine Beckman, district manager of Community Board 10.
Beckman said the property on Ovington Avenue is more than 35,000 square feet, and the demolition is making way for a new high school to help address overcrowding in the area.
“Fort Hamilton High School is one of the most overcrowded high schools in the city of New York, and this will hopefully alleviate some of that overcrowding,” said Beckman.
A spokesperson for the city’s School Construction Authority told News 12 on Tuesday that the new high school will be state-of-the-art, fully accessible and fully air-conditioned. It is expected to have 676 seats and open in the fall of 2028.
“Adding needed seats, especially for a high school, is certainly something advocated for by parents over the years,” said Beckman.
Beckman said the School Construction Authority is expected to notify neighbors of the exact demolition date within the coming days.
