A planned Walgreens closure in Soundview is drawing concern from community members who say they rely on the store for medication and other everyday needs.

The Walgreens at the corner of Story Avenue and Noble Avenue is set to close in early September.

"Tremendous loss to the community and neighborhood," said Calvin Milligan, who lives in the neighborhood.

Jessie Perez, who lives around the block and visits the Walgreens every week, said she was upset when she heard about the closure.

"When I heard that, my heart dropped because I don't know what I'm gonna do," Perez said. "Not too happy about it."

Mason, who lives in Soundview, said the closure could create problems for older residents.

"This is terrible for the neighborhood. You have older people who won't be able to access their pharmacy medication," Mason said.

The Walgreens had a full parking lot Friday evening, but residents said they are concerned about what the closure will mean for people who live nearby.

"I got to go to Parkchester and there's no parking there," one resident said.

"The one by Yankee Stadium, I'm not going there," the resident added.

Residents also said the closure could affect families with children.

For Perez, the store's proximity is particularly important because she has difficulty walking long distances.

"I'm right across the street and I'm handicap because I can't walk long distances and they're gonna close it," Perez said.

Whatever they use the store for, community members said they hope Walgreens reconsiders its decision.

"Think this over before you make a final decision. Not sure if it's too late, but the community needs this facility," Milligan said.

The closure comes as Walgreens has shut down stores across multiple states, including New Jersey.

News 12 reached out to Walgreens for comment about the situation and is waiting to hear back.
