A plan for Maimonides Hospital to join the city’s public health care system is facing pushback from some Borough Park residents.

Maimonides announced the partnership with NYC Health + Hospitals last year. The deal would give the hospital access to higher Medicaid reimbursement rates and a new electronic health record system. But some residents fear the hospital could become less responsive to the community it has served for generations.

"This will become a huge building that’s not responsive to anybody," said longtime patient Yosef Rapaport. "It’s really terrible."

A Maimonides spokesperson told News 12 the partnership gives the hospital its best chance to secure the financial support it needs while expanding care. The hospital also pointed to proposed federal budget cuts that could threaten safety-net hospitals across the country. And NYC Health + Hospitals said they are committed to finalizing their partnership as quickly as possible in service to patients, staff and communities.

A vote connected to the merger is scheduled for later this month.
