An East Flatbush community is in mourning following the death of a beloved school crossing guard.

Deborah Ann Haywood was an NYPD School crossing Guard for more than 44 years at the P.S. 398 Walter Weaver School.

"Everybody loved her," said Carean Johnson, Haywood's niece. "She was like a mother figure to like a bunch of little kids."

Family, friends and her current and former students --some now 50 years old--- gathered outside the school Sunday night to honor her legacy and release balloons.

Haywood died on Aug. 24, but the East Flatbush community is holding on to her memory and hoping to rename the street after her.

"You can see she had a lot of love around her, and she gave a lot of love," said her daughter, Debbie Haywood, while pointing to a crowd of a few dozen people. "I think that's just the most important part of this situation."

Deborah Ann Haywood was a community fixture, a mother of six, who will be deeply missed, according to her daughter.
