Labor Day weekend brings one last taste of summer to Jersey Shore

At Jenkinson's Boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach, visitors spent Labor Day weekend enjoying a combination that never gets old — the beach, amusement rides, food and games.

The unofficial end of summer has arrived at the Jersey Shore, and families are making the most of the final days of the season.

Rachel Arjang, of Norwood, said her family planned to spend the weekend enjoying the beach and boardwalk together.

Her son, Ethan, summed up the itinerary simply: amusement park, beach — and then more amusement park and beach.

For other families, the weekend was also about getting in a few more summer activities before school gets fully underway.

Jayden Johnson, of Rutherford, said he planned to spend time on the beach, grab some food and play arcade games.

While visitors were enjoying the final stretch of summer, businesses along the boardwalk were also hoping for a strong holiday weekend.

Mike St. George, beverage manager at Martell's Tiki Bar, said the weekend lineup includes DJs and bands, with businesses hoping favorable weather will help bring people out.

He also noted that Labor Day falls later this year, while many children and teachers are already back at school.

Jenkinson's director of marketing Lisa Lightbody said the boardwalk's attractions will be open throughout the holiday weekend, including the beach, rides, mini golf, restaurants, gift shops, games, arcades and indoor aquarium.

For visitors, though, the weekend is about more than just one last trip to the Shore.

Timothy Heaney, of Bayonne, said summer is a time to slow down and enjoy the weather, pool and ocean after working hard throughout the year.

And while summer may be winding down, there's always next year — when the beach, boardwalk and all that Shore fun return.
