One person is dead following a hit-and-run on Sunrise Highway in North Lindenhurst.

Police say they have arrested 65-year-old Daniel Gomez at his home following the deadly crash and charged him with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash involving a fatality.

According to investigators, Gomez struck a pedestrian crossing the highway on North Indiana Avenue near Babylon Town Hall in North Lindenhurst.

Authorities identified the pedestrian killed as 56-year-old Erik Ermanovics.

Police were called to the area around 4:30 a.m. The crash shut down both directions of Sunrise Highway for much of the morning before the roadway reopened around 1 p.m.

Drivers at the scene said they were shocked to learn someone had been killed there, with some saying they do not typically consider that stretch of road to be especially dangerous.

"It's horrible. People have to be careful. I don't see this as an area where there are different roads coming together. It surprises me. There are other areas on the Island I think are more dangerous than this area," said Debbie Chiesa of West Babylon.
