Homeowners on the south side of Westport are on edge after a rash of residential mail thefts in their neighborhood.

"That's a federal offense," Melissa Austin says. "It's a little unnerving."

Police say they discovered discarded mail and opened packages Tuesday near Hillspoint, Greens Farms, and Prospect roads, as well as the Compo Beach area.

Lt. Anthony Prezioso believes the thefts occurred early in the morning and overnight.

"This is not unprecedented," Prezioso says. "It's just something that is a little bit unusual... especially at a larger scale like this."

If you live in the area, Prezioso says, take a look at your security camera footage to see if you caught the alleged thieves in the act.

"Don't assume that everyone is going to honor your privacy," Prezioso says. "Picking up your mail every day... not leaving mail in your mailboxes unattended overnight or packages unattended."

While police continue to investigate, Austin says she's staying more vigilant.

"Now I'll be more on top of it," Austin says. "But I didn't really feel like there was a worry to run out and get the mail quickly."
