The New York State Department of Health issued a statement Monday on the first measles-associated death in New York state for over 30 years.

The individual was a child from Lewis County, according to the DOH.

It issued the following joint statement with Lewis County Public Health:

“We are deeply saddened by the death of a child in Lewis County associated with the ongoing measles outbreak. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the child’s family and loved ones and ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time. Measles is a highly contagious disease that can cause serious complications and death. Vaccination is the best protection against measles. The Department has offered resources to Lewis County to assist with community outreach and support local vaccination efforts – both in response to this case, and as part of our ongoing efforts to support counties that are facing this ongoing measles outbreak. We urge New Yorkers to ensure they are up to date on measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccinations and speak to their healthcare provider about immunizations.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a State Disaster Emergency on Oct. 5 in response to the measles outbreak across areas of New York and neighboring states. As News 12 reported, Nassau County confirmed its second measles case of 2026 on Oct. 16 and warned of potential exposure.

“Measles is highly contagious, and vaccination remains our best protection against this dangerous disease," said Gov. Hochul. "This is New York’s first measles-related death in 30 years."

The DOH released a health advisory for healthcare providers on clinical guidance for measles.

A person with measles can pass it to others as soon as four days before a rash appears and as late as four days after the rash appears, according to the DOH. People who are exposed to measles and not immune should quarantine for 21 days after exposure, and those who test positive should isolate until four days after the rash appears.
