Ninth Avenue is getting an upgrade above and below street level.
City officials and council members gathered in midtown on Tuesday to celebrate upgrades to Manhattan's water distribution system and street improvements along one of midtown's busiest corridors.
The $231 million infrastructure project includes a complete street redesign that reclaims more space for pedestrians and cyclists, along with 14 miles of new water mains and sewers.
“To address this, DOT removed a southbound travel lane and created what we are calling super sidewalks,” said New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.
As part of the project, the Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Design and Construction installed 18,000 feet of water mains, replaced over 5,000 feet of sewers and reconstructed 650,000 square feet of roadway along with curbs and sidewalks.
“When we build water infrastructure in New York City, we think about it as having a 100+ year life. So this is something our grandchild will be relying on and our great-grandchild,” said Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwal.
“We are not done in this community. This year we continue our work on Ninth Avenue with similar upgrades between 30th Street and 34th Street. …   so this is going to be the future of our city,” said Rodriguez
