Utility companies straining to restore power after last Friday’s storm were dealt a major setback with Wednesday’s snowstorm.

Nearly 50,000 customers across the region had no power Thursday afternoon.

At a news briefing with state and local officials at Yorktown police headquarters Thursday, Westchester County Executive George Latimer called on the utility companies to step up their response in the aftermath of two devastating storms.

On Saw Mill River Road in Yorktown, crews from Philadelphia spent Thursday working with NYSEG to get the power back on for residents after trees came crashing down dangerously close to power lines. Peter and Denise Gavin, of Yorktown, said they initially lost power at 4 a.m. last Saturday. They briefly got it back Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. but then lost it again Tuesday evening.

No one knows when the lights will be back on, and the Gavins say they can’t wait for spring, which is 12 days away.

"I was looking at gardening catalogs last night. I'm just going to think of something pretty,” said Denise Gavin.
