The second part of an improvement project to better Hunts Point is underway.
The Hunts Point Market generates more than $2 billion annually for the South Bronx.
Sixty percent of the produce, fish and meat used by New York City residents comes from the market, which is why Gov. Andrew Cuomo is investing in the neighborhood.
Cuomo announced the second phase of the Hunts Point Access Improvement Project is underway.
The efforts will fix roads for over a mile of the Bruckner Expressway and construct ramps for easy access to the distribution center. It will cause less traffic on local roads.
The project hopes to improve safety on local streets, reduce traffic and create a better route to the Hunts Point Market. It will make room for the new Sheriden Expressway.
New York is investing $1.7 billion in the three-phase project.
The first phase of the project started in December 2019 by creating ramps and replacing bridges.
It is still ongoing.
Phase three of the project will add a third lane to the Bruckner Expressway. Local intersections will also be upgraded with new sidewalks, curbs and traffic lights put in place. Garrison Park will undergo a transformation to give residents access to the Bronx River, and a shared-use path will be constructed to connect the river with Concrete Plant Park.
Councilman Rafael Salamanca Jr. is praising the investment in the South Bronx, saying: “This project will be transformational for the South Bronx and for our regional economy because it will help make our roadways less congested, our air cleaner and will allow people and goods to move more efficiently through our neighborhood.” Other local leaders say the project is long overdue and will improve the neighborhood for the better
The entire project is scheduled to be complete by fall 2025.
