Four people were sent to the hospital Saturday after a police SUV and a BMW collided in Canarsie.
Police say the unit was responding to a report of a shot fired on 82nd Street and Avenue I at the time of the crash.
Witnesses say the police car was speeding with its lights on, but without its siren. Police officials say it is typical to not put sirens on when responding to gunshots fired.
Dale Marshall says he let his cousin and brother borrow his BMW and saw the two vehicles collide. He says officers need to be more careful when responding to emergencies.
"My cousin and brother could have been seriously hurt," Marshall told News 12 Brooklyn.
Two NYPD officers were taken to Kings County Hospital. Marshall's family members were taken to Brookdale Hospital. All had minor injuries.
Police say they are investigating the crash and the shot fired report.
