A 4-year-old boy is recovering after police say he was struck by an SUV while crossing the street with his family in Cobble Hill on Thursday.
The incident happened just before 5 p.m. at the intersection of Court Street and Atlantic Avenue, according to the NYPD.
Investigators say the driver was heading east on Court Street in a right-turn-only lane but continued straight, hitting the boy in the ankle.
The driver then made a left onto Atlantic Avenue and fled the scene.
The child was taken to Cobble Hill Hospital in stable condition.
The intersection is one of the busiest in the neighborhood and has been the site of previous traffic incidents.
In 2023, an 18-year-old woman was killed when a car crashed into the nearby Trader Joe’s. The store’s ramp remains boarded up nearly two years later.
The Department of Transportation has made changes to Atlantic Avenue in recent years, including the installation of mid-block crosswalks.
But some parents say they’re frustrated that more hasn’t been done to improve safety in the area.
“It’s extremely dangerous for small children,” said one local father. “This intersection gives me—I don’t want to say constant anxiety—but it’s definitely an overarching fear. People rip through here all the time at high rates of speed.”
No arrests have been made so far, and the investigation is ongoing.
