A 45-year-old woman is facing animal cruelty charges after dozens of animals were removed from her Ocean Hill apartment, according to police and the ASPCA.
Police say Jessica Styles was arrested June 17 at a building on Herkimer Street and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.
The arrest came after authorities investigated reports of animals living in poor conditions inside the apartment.
According to the ASPCA, nearly 30 animals were removed from the home during the execution of a search warrant. The animals included 21 dogs, four cats and one pigeon. A deceased puppy was also found inside the apartment.
Photos released by the ASPCA show several of the dogs that were rescued from the home.
The ASPCA says many of the animals were being kept in crates throughout the apartment.
After being removed, the animals were taken to ASPCA facilities for veterinary examinations and treatment.
Veterinary staff found many of the dogs were covered in urine and feces and suffering from severe flea infestations, according to the ASPCA. Some of the younger dogs were underweight, while some of the older dogs had untreated dental disease.
The animals are now receiving medical treatment and rehabilitation.
The ASPCA is assisting the NYPD and the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office with the ongoing criminal investigation.
Styles is expected to face the charges in court as the case moves forward.
