Video obtained by News 12 captures the moment a car exploded after catching fire in Longwood. The FDNY says seven firefighters were hospitalized.
Cars and nearby trash caught fire at 955 Westchester Ave. just after 7 p.m. Wednesday. Fire officials say firefighters were battling the flames when the car exploded, sending a large fireball into the sky.
The seven firefighters surrounded by the wall of fire are expected to recover at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi. Three of those firefighters suffered serious burns and were admitted to the trauma and burn center, according to the FDNY.
A firetruck that was damaged in the explosion had to be towed from the scene.
The FDNY says they are actively investigating the cause of the explosion and don't believe wind was a factor.
