8 precautions and safeguards to prevent eye injuries
Most people believe that eye injuries are most common on the job, but in fact, nearly half of all eye injuries occur in the home, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Some eye injuries can be prevented with some extra precautions and safeguards, here are some safety tips:

1. Cleaning

When using household chemicals, read instructions and labels carefully, work in well-ventilated areas and make sure to point spray nozzles away from you. Many chemicals are extremely hazardous and can permanently destroy the surface of your eyes, resulting in blindness.

2. Cooking

Cooking foods can splatter hot grease or oil. Use grease shields on frying pans to protect yourself from splattering.

3. Home improvement projects

Use caution when drilling or hammering screws or nails into walls or hard surfaces like brick or cement, the screws or nails can fly into the air, or fragments can come off the surface.

4. Loose rugs and railings

Loose rugs and railings can cause falls or slips. Secure rugs with a non-slip pad underneath. Check to make sure railings are secure and not loose. Put padding on sharp corners and edges if you have children or the elderly in your house.

5. In the yard

When mowing the lawn, check the area first for sticks, rocks or other items that can fly out from under the mower.

6. In the garage or workshop

Keep your tools in good condition - damaged tools should be repaired or replaced. If you're working with solvents or other chemicals, make sure that all spray nozzles are directed away from you. Cover your eyes when doing anything that can cause fragments or dust particles.

7. Fireworks

If you suffer an eye injury from a firework, seek medical attention immediately. Do not rub, rinse or apply pressure to your eyes. And do not remove any objects that are stuck in the eye.

8. Digital eye strain

If you spend hours a day using digital devices, like computers, phones and tables, you might notice your vision blurs, and your eyes feel achy and tired. You may also find your eyes become dry, and will tear or sting. Here are some tips to relieve eye strain.
