$8M upgrades help revitalize streetscape along the Fulton Mall

New benches, planting beds and wider sidewalks are all part of a transformed streetscape to revitalize retail along Fulton Mall in Downtown Brooklyn.
“It just seems like the neighborhood is really on an upswing,” said St. John Frizell, co-owner of the Gage & Tollner restaurant.
The business originally opened in 1892, so the place has seen the area evolve.
“The most recent changes have been really good,” said Frizell.
Regina Myer, president of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, said the upgrades come after years of design and about a year of construction.
“What we’ve heard is that people just feel more comfortable on the street,” said Myer.
The project is thanks in large part to $8 million in city funds to transform eight blocks of Fulton Mall from Boreum Place to Flatbush Avenue.
“I think what’s exciting is that we’re already seeing changes on Fulton Street,” said Myer.
Myer said the improvements are pedestrian friendly, provide a greener environment and support business.
That includes storefront vacancies. Three supermarkets are opening by the end of this month, all in the neighborhood known for its courthouses.
“If you’ve only been to this neighborhood for jury duty, it’s time to come back,” said Frizell.
