The district attorney?s office has released the recording of a 911 call that was played last week to the jurors in the murder trial of Nixzmary Brown?s mother.
On the tape, Nixzaliz Santiago, the mother of the 7-year-old girl that was beaten to death by her stepfather, can be heard wailing in the background while a neighbor is frantically talking to a 911 operator. Many, however, are questioning the mother?s sincerity.
The neighbor who made the call, Ulbis Rivera, believes Santiago was faking her emotional response. Rivera testified that the girl?s mother started crying only when she dialed 911. Before and after the call was made, Rivera said Santiago was calm.
"Her daughter was on the floor, she was all disfigured," Rivera said. "It went through my head: 'Santiago?s calm. The girl is dead, and she's acting like nothing happened.'"
Santiago?s defense attorney, Kathleen Mullen, disagrees.
"I just think if she's faking, she should've and would've done a better job," Mullen said.
Santiago is facing murder charges for allegedly failing to help her daughter before her husband, Cesar Rodriguez, beat and tortured the little girl to death. Her attorneys, however, claim Santiago herself was a victim of domestic violence.
Rodriguez is already serving 25 years behind bars after being convicted of manslaughter in March for the girl?s death.
