Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Friday a $9 million plan to restore the Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, including the historic arch at the location.
The mayor announced a plan to restore the arch during a news conference.
The nearly $9 million capital project will enable the Prospect Park Alliance to replace the arch's roof, fix the brick and stone structure, add trees and replace the existing chain-link fence. It has been about 40 years since its last makeover.
The historic arch has been a part of the plaza since 1889 and it commemorates soldiers who fought with the union during the United States Civil War.
"I hope it will also inspire us,” de Blasio says. “It's our turn, all of us in this generation to travel that same path to create healing and unity and there is no place that represents the human possibility, the possibility of this country more than Brooklyn."
The mayor says he and his wife got married under a tree in Prospect Park and the area is the heart and soul of Brooklyn.
