According to the IRS, scammers are using the economic stimulus check program to gain Social Security and bank account numbers.
One way scammers are attempting to steal personal information is by making phone calls to homes impersonating an IRS employee. The callers say that they need Social Security numbers to process the economic stimulus payment.
Another way scammers are attempting to gain information is through e-mail. Some are sending out messages that ask recipients to fill out a form to receive direct deposit of the payment into their bank accounts. The IRS states that people do not need to fill out any forms to get the stimulus check, as long as taxes were filed.
The IRS is recommending that people look out for unsolicited e-mails, avoid clicking on any links asking for personal information, and to report any potential scams to authorities.
