Anti-death penalty advocates are denouncing the imprisonment of a former death row inmate from Brooklyn. Decades ago, Lawrence Hayes was given the death penalty in connection with a police officer?s murder. Hayes served 20 years on death row and was paroled in the early 90s when the death penalty was overturned in New York. Upon his release, Hayes became an outspoken critic of the death penalty and lobbied to reform the parole system. Supporters say his aggressive stance angered officials, who dreamed up bogus parole violations to put him back behind bars. State parole officials say Hayes is back in jail for using cocaine and violating his parole. They say the state would never lock someone up for speaking out.
