Downtown Brooklyn is getting a major housing boost with the arrival of The Maxwell, a new apartment building offering hundreds of units, including dozens through the housing lottery.
The development, built on the former site of clergy housing for St. Boniface Church, has drawn major attention with more than 17,000 applications. The building features 279 units, including 69 affordable units distributed across 36 of the building's 40 floors.
“There is a diverse mix of affordable units for many different types of residents,” said developer Thomas Friedland.
Friedland added that the units' smaller footprint and more efficient electrical system have allowed them to drop costs for even market-rate units.
Amenities include in-unit washer-dryers, a gym, rooftop space, a dog run and shared office areas. Both prospective lottery winners and renters say the pricing and perks are drawing them in.
“I think we need something like this,” said Robert Dickerson, who’s considering moving in. “I hope in some way everyone gets to be a part of the building," adding he hopes the building will be able to accommodate wheelchair users like him.
“The affordability was one thing that got my attention — I was shocked at the price,” added visitor Adedire Adebayo.
Move-in day is set for July 1.
