The smoke and haze traces back to Canadian wildfires, making New York experience hazardous air quality levels at multiple points this week.

An air quality alert is still in effect until midnight in New York City.
City officials are taking precautionary measures and halting events and even in-person learning for students. It's all in an effort to keep New Yorkers and homeless New Yorkers safe.
All public high schools, District 79 and early childhood contracted programs will be remote today.
The Wildlife Conservation Society closed down zoos Thursday in the Bronx and in Brooklyn. They have been reopened Friday as they monitor air quality levels.
Other activities, like Broadway shows, were also canceled.
