Brooklyn residents gathered for the annual Pumpkin Smash at the Red Hook Community Farm on Saturday.
Instead of going to waste after the holiday, Halloween pumpkins are being put to good use.
The New York City Compost Project, hosted by Brooklyn Botanic Garden, helped kids and parents smash the pumpkins.
The compost will then be used to replenish soil. Renee Crowley, New York City Compost Project coordinator, says it will be used on the farm to help grow vegetables and for other "greening" projects around the city.
